Understanding the Rules

What questions should I ask about a biologic product?

A practical checklist. Good answers are specific. Vague answers tell you something too.

4 minute read  ·  Plain-language explainer  ·  Not medical advice

Whether you are a healthcare professional evaluating a supplier or a patient trying to understand what has been suggested to you, the same set of questions does most of the work.

About the product itself

  • What exactly is this product? Not the category — the specific product.
  • What is its regulatory status, and for which specific use?
  • Is it intended for research use, investigational use, or established clinical use?
  • Who manufactures it?

About where it came from

  • What is the source of the biological material?
  • What donor screening and consent processes applied?
  • How was it processed, and under what conditions?
  • What testing was performed on this specific lot?

About handling

  • What are the storage requirements?
  • How was it transported, and was temperature monitored in transit?
  • What is the expiration date for this lot?
  • What happens if the product is received outside its required conditions?

About documentation

  • What documentation accompanies the product?
  • Can I see it before making a decision?
  • How is this lot identified in your records?
  • Who do I contact if a question arises later?

About the evidence

  • What evidence supports the specific use being described to me?
  • Is that evidence about this product, or about a different product in the same category?
  • What is not yet known?
